These systems are made up of three components: detection, actuation, and delivery. They can be operated manually or automatically. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 17 & 17A require the regular inspection, testing, and maintenance to ensure the system will function properly in the event of an emergency.

In 1992, Underwriters Laboratory, Inc. introduced the UL300 fire standard, which addressed fire conditions in kitchens using high temperature cooking mediums and the improved efficiency appliances. In 1998, NFPA added the compliance of UL300 to its standard.

A. Energy efficiency has driven the demand for cooking appliances that heat faster, cook hotter and cool slower. With this improvement new cooking mediums were needed and vegetable oils are healthier and cook at higher temperatures. However, it auto-ignites at a significantly higher temperature that can't be extinguished by dry chemical agents.

Q. Can modifications be made to the protected area without changing the design of the system?
A. No, with all pre-engineered systems the criteria and manner in which the area is being protected is very specific and will need to be evaluated before changes are implemented.
